Remember what it was like to be a kid? The gleeful feeling of riding a bike without training wheels for the first time. Learning how to swim, play soccer, or even read your first chapter book. Everything was unfamiliar, exciting, and new. You were probably a little rough around the edges but despite this, excitement easily filled you to the brim and plastered a perma-grin on your face. The goal of “Plastic Free February” was simple … raise awareness of our excessive plastic use. We often hear stories where plastic use has created major environmental issues around the world. Guess what? These issues are also present in each of our own backyards. Here is the good, the bad, and the impact of #PlasticFreeFeb. Any active minded parent, like me, perpetually faces the conflict between encouraging your kid(s) to embrace experiences while not being overbearing. It’s an ongoing learning process for adults and kiddos alike. I felt the need to introduce my kids to skiing. I've learned a lot from my approach with my oldest.
Maybe it’s the way I was brought up. Born and raised in Montoursville, PA (pop. 4000), I was surrounded by lazy creeks, rolling ridgelines, hemlock riddled state game lands and what was assuredly a greater deer population than people. Maybe it’s because I’ve journeyed through 38-years of personal and professional paths that consistently intersect with environmental influences.
Whatever the reasons, I have a soft spot in my heart for our natural world. I appreciate it, respect it, and love it. I want to raise awareness of it’s importance so that others can enjoy it for years to come. |
