What Is Run Streaking?

Streaking can mean wildly different things depending on where you are in your life … true story, as a William & Mary undergrad, I was informed and intrigued of the student triathlon tradition that included “Streaking the Sunken Gardens” … I’ll let you guess if I completed this triathlon or not. But in the running world or more broadly, the endurance sports world, “streaking” refers maintaining consecutive days of activity. The total number of days is all dependent on how long you want to, or can, maintain your “streak”. The beauty of “streaking” is that you can set your own parameters, find motivation in your own way, and complete that goal on your own terms.

The most popular “streak” is running at least one mile a day for as long as your streak remains intact. Charlotte’s biggest run crew, MAD Miles, was built upon this simple but powerful concept. M-A-D stands for “Mile A Day” and the co-founder, Cornell Jones is, as of this writing, on a streak of running at least 1 mile for 2520 days ... and counting! No doubt that hundreds if not thousands have been motivated to start their own streaks!

The uniqueness of “streaking” is that you can make it your own. Some readers might remember Chelsea “Friggin’” Mister tossing out a “Double Dog Dare Ya” challenge to run a 5K a day for a week which turned into a full blown month long, and city wide challenge for hundreds (Read more HERE). You might also remember me posting about my own personal journey of running at least one half marathon a month for 50 straight months earlier this year HERE (it’s currently up to 59 months). And just this past weekend my wife, Kristi Bratton, completed her 100th straight week of running at least one 5K HERE. Each of these streaks were conceptualized and started for different reasons but they all provided an outlet for consistent activity.

The point is, in its most basic form, “streaking” is a self-determined commitment to prioritizing time for your activity of choice each and every day. An internal motivator to get the job done when you don’t always feel in the mood. A responsibility to move and stay active.
 
Naturally there are pros (establishing productive habits, maintaining an activity and healthy lifestyle, prioritizing time for yourself, mental development, etc.) and some cons (potential for overuse training, deprioritizing other training, etc) but from my perspective, it’s the perfect blend of balancing the physical and mental elements of our lives. That balance builds character and allows us to further develop and grow in our own active journey.
