What Is A Random Distance Running Race?

If you’re readying this you’re already (somewhat) interested or intrigued in this alternative type of running event, but what exactly is a Random Distance Run/Race?

A random distance running event is a run or race where participants show up without knowing the specific distance, course, surface or time they’ll be running until just moments before the start … to sprinkle a little more mental warfare into the mix, sometimes they don’t even know until after the event has even started! Yeah, this format might not be for everyone, but it is gaining some big momentum in the alternative running event space lately.

Opposed to a typical running event with a predetermined distance (Ex: 5K, 10K, Marathon, etc), set time window (Ex: 1hr, 10hr, 24hr, etc), or known course (road, trail, elevation gain/loss, etc) runners sign up only with a ballpark range known (Ex: Somewhere between 3 and 30 miles … or in the case of our 2026 “MOVE” event somewhere in the 1.5 to 31.8 mile range).

The randomness of the event can be revealed in any number of also random ways. We’re heard of some RD’s pulling from a deck of cards, rolling dice, random number generator apps, and in some super funky formats, the distance is kept a secret and only revealed AFTER the runners have been signaled to stop.

There is a massive psychological aspect to this type of event. (Reminder, our Founder studied Kinesiology and Psychology in undergrad!) How to train? How to pace? When to turn the jets on or hold back? What is the best nutritional approach? Who knows … that’s the beauty and chaotic nature of the event.

On the flip side, this format typically removes the pressure of chasing a PR or having a predetermined game plan heading into the event. There can still be a competitive nature to this format but adaptability, curiosity, and just figuring it out on the fly takes the front seat.

As you would imagine with this “we’ll see what happens” approach, random distance events are typically more informal, vibey and community focused (“MOVE” has all of that and a ton of environmental initiatives folded in) and cater to runners who are looking for an a totally different running experience.

At the most fundamental level, Random Distance events are another great way to change up the routine, provide alternative racing experience and offer a unique and memorable way to spend some time getting some movement in.

We hope to see you at “MOVE” on 1/31/26 if you are in the Charlotte, NC area or at the very least, look for a random distance event in your neck of the woods, streets, trails, track, or mountain peak. Just find an excuse to move!
