Author: Adam Bratton Read Time: 3 mins I grew up on the outskirts of a tiny little “borough” in the middle of nowhere PA. The area is marginally-famous for being the home of the Little League World Series, having a higher deer population vs human population in the county to the north, and the emerging gravel cycling scene (HERE and HERE amongst endless others). There’s also a stunningly scenic place called World’s End State Park (and the bucket list worthy 57-mile Loyalsock Trail) a mere 21 miles as the crow flies from my childhood home. My point is, I grew up on a hilltop at the end of a winding gravel road in the heart of the rolling Appalachian Mountains. I now appreciate my upbringing in this magical slice of the world with endless “core memories” of outdoor recreation to show for it. Montoursville, PA has a special and indescribable part of my heart which was partially documented in “Heading Home: Why I Bikepacked 650+ Miles Through A Hurricane”. This deeply meaningful love for, and draw to, “the mountains” has stuck with me while living in tidal Virginia for 8+ years and my current residence in Charlotte, NC for the past 17+ (Classic story of meeting "a girl" and inadvertently rooting down … Love you Kristi!). Another classic story has also been in play all these years … “you can take the boy out of the mountains, but you can’t take the mountains out of the boy”. The mountains have been tugging at my heart strings since migrating south from PA in 2001. This tugging has gotten more aggressive over the past few years. Good news, this story now has its next chapter. That “girl” and I recently bought a place nestled along the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western NC in the quaint little town of Black Mountain. We've loved getting to know the area (and the endless options for outdoor action and small mountain town living) and are outrageously excited to share it with the HPM community as a short-term rental to further support the mission of “inspiring more activity in people’s lives”! Manage your expectations here for a second as the MAP House (MAP = Mountain Adventure Pad) isn’t a luxury chalet dangling precariously off a sheer rock face, but this perfectly placed launchpad for adventure has all the comforts you need and more importantly, for this audience, is located in the literal heart of endless outdoor options of Western NC. Some geographical highlights …
We’ve poured a ton of time, effort, and intention into this place over the past few months and are super proud to officially open up the MAP House to friends, family and adventure seekers to experience the endless opportunities that Western NC has to offer including each of the following pictures captured during adventures straight out the door! If you’re one of the HPM humans that read these Journals as soon as we put them out, you’re in luck, we’re offering a special 10% discount for stays through April. (If you are one of the super forward thinking Stoke Squad members, you get a 10% discount on MAP House rentals all year long!). In either case, DM us on social @MapHouseWesternNC or Message us through the listing on Airbnb to take advantage of the discount. Whatever you’re looking for in your “weekend adventure” pursuits, know that we have you and endless outdoor options in mind when expanding the HPM vibe into the mountains of Western NC. That same “mountain” vibe that has been such an inspirational part of my personal life continues through my professional life through the HPM company, brand, and mission. Join us!
