Introducing HPM's Adventure Club

The concept behind a new HPM initiative unveiled itself this past May when I was thumbing through Issue 32 of Adventure Journal. An article entitled “Explorer’s Club Flag” immediately flooded me with intrigue and adventure. The Explorers Club’s concept of a “Flag" being carried during expeditions to the farthest reaches of the human spirit over decades of exploration immediately struck a chord within the core of what HPM is all about. Welcome to Human Powered Movement’s Adventure Club.

The Explorers Club and Human Powered Movement certainly have some differences:

• The Explorers Club has been around since 1904 … HPM was born in 2020
• The Explorers Club has a long list of iconic members like Neil Armstrong, Sir Edmund Hillary, Amelia Earhart and President Teddy Roosevelt … HPM is a community of grassroots and gritty bad asses
• The Explorers Club has Jeff Bezos as their Honorary Chair and Buzz Aldrin as their Honorary President … HPM has … my dumbass and an incredible group of core supporters that really make this thing tick
• The Explorers Club’s is a “multidisciplinary society dedicated to the advancement of field research, scientific exploration and resource conservation.” … HPM’s mission is to “Inspire More Activity In People’s Lives”

Even with some nuanced differences, the shared concepts of venturing into nature, learning about ourselves, and caring for our environment are very much aligned. The perpetual pursuit of seeking what’s around the next river bend or trail, the desire to push our bodies beyond what we once thought was out of reach, the journey for richer experiences beyond what we see on our handheld devices.

The idea of an “HPM Flag” acting as a symbol of our collective outdoor adventures is something that we can fully embrace! Think of the HPM Flag as the baton on a never ending 4x400 relay race around a track. It represents all of our outdoor pursuits across age, sport, geographic location, difficulty (or ease), gender, race, duration, and more. 

The goals of the HPM Adventure Club are pretty simple:

• Further reiterate that HPM is a universal concept and not bound to our small but mighty basecamp of Charlotte, NC
• Showcase the epic and everyday stories, adventures and experiences that our community continues to amaze us with
• Support your adventures with HPM merchandise and a platform to inspire others
