Author: Adam Bratton Read Time: 2 mins HPM’s mission of inspiring more activity in people’s lives has long had more than one meaning. We enable a wide range of physical activities to fight against a sedentary lifestyle. We aim to inspire more eco-conscious decisions on a daily basis. We love creative opportunities for people to get out of their comfort zones and accomplish things they previously didn’t think possible. We bring people together, promote positive energy and support inclusiveness for all. I’ve reflected quite a bit on this last point over the last two months and want to make things clear … I won’t bore you with all the details but do want to give a little context. At our Perennial Endurance Run earlier this year, I simply did not live up to this last point. During some of the pre-event announcements I shared some personal beliefs, strong support for our immigrant friends/community, and some very sharp Anti-ICE comments. While I have not and will not apologies for those comments, I have realized that there is a better, more productive way to show support for things that I believe without alienating those that have different beliefs and views. I also realize that while we won’t always agree with each other, maintaining positive and truly inclusive mindset (not just selective inclusiveness to my own beliefs) within our community means listening, learning and respecting others and their right to have their own opinions. Open and constructive conversations are far better than divisive dialogue … something that we often need to remind ourselves of within our current landscape. Movement, in any form can and is a unifying experience for humans from all walks of life. Our events are beautiful (and sweaty, bloody, exhausting, tearful, etc.) platforms for physical expression and togetherness through the inevitable highs and lows of endurance sports. We will continue to lift up and celebrate those incredible human efforts. We respect everyone’s rights and beliefs to have their own opinions. And just like I'm not afraid to call myself out when not maintaining a positive, respectful and constructive approach, we expect all HPMers to join us in focus on celebrating those physical accomplishments while bringing positive support and inclusiveness that is core to the HPM ethos. We’ve taking another page our of our friend’s (Around the Crown 10K) playbook and adding a “Positive Support & Inclusivity Waiver” to our events moving forward. /// Human Powered Movement (HPM) is committed to fostering a positive, diverse and inclusive environment for all who attend and/or participate in our events. There are uplifting and unifying bonds among humans who love to move that transcend social, cultural, political, and economic differences. We create welcoming opportunities to celebrate and uplift that movement and the incredible endurance efforts that we are honored to witness. All who attend and/or participate in our events do so with the understanding that these opportunities are created to enable, uplift and show support for the physical efforts that occur regardless of race, religion, color, gender, age, sexual orientation, national origin, political alignment, disability, etc. These events are not platforms for self-demonstration that don’t support unity, positivity, and encouragement of fellow humans. HPM proudly stands with all humans and does not allow infringement on this concept. Self-expression that does not align with supporting one another nor acts of discrimination, racism, sexism or harassment toward any participant, spectator, volunteer or event staff are not allowed and is grounds for removal from the event. /// HPM is proud to have a wide cross-section of people within our community that focus on appreciating, respecting and supporting each other for who they are, and what they are physically capable of accomplishing regardless of belief system. Our approach is aimed at fostering a more positive and diverse community through the magically unifying connection of movement. This is an infinite game that we will constantly work towards and you are an active participant in this approach. Whatever you believe, if you are a human with a positive mindset, we invite you join us in supporting and encouraging movement.
