Author: Adam Bratton Read Time: 3 mins I got a text a few days after Hurricane Helene swept through the Eastern US causing catastrophic destruction, specifically in Western NC, our backyard. “Know anyone that can donate old climbing rope, carabiners, or harnesses … they’re rope-bridging people out and need more supplies”. People up and down the east coast had started to mobilize and Human Powered Movement would take a leading role to help our neighbors in need. That text had come from Nick Rogers, co-owner of Blackberry Ridge Farm (where we host Psychoactive Last Runner Standing Event), who was working with Heroes 4 Humanity, a non-profit group of military veterans who provide boots-on-the-ground humanitarian aid and personnel rescue when disasters strike. Within a few days of the hurricane, we had coordinated collection sites state wide, and would pick up donated rope and deliver straight to the front-line rescue efforts. Huge thanks to Julie Rogers, the other co-owner of Blackberry Ridge Farm for assisting in the coordination and to Ruckus Climbing in Greensboro, Progression Climbing in Raleigh area and Cliff Hangers in the Charlotte area for stepping up as collection sites. Massive thanks to Carolina Climbing Coalition, Pro climbers like Alex Johnson, and many others for spreading the word. Shout out to everyone that liked, commented, shared, DM’ed on our posts and especially those that donated in this time of need. When it was all said and done, we had collected over 15,000ft of climbing rope from as far as DC, Pittsburgh and Colorado! The climbing community stepped up in a massive way and had a substantive and immeasurable impact on the search and rescue efforts in Western NC. As things began to stabilize, we ended up with some extra rope and knew exactly what to do with it. A small, but mighty Western NC business called Cactus to Pine takes retired climbing rope and turns it into functional pieces of art. A perfect custom merchandise item that aligns with HPM’s longstanding sustainable ethos and allowed us to make a bulk purchase to support a small business that was also deeply impacted by the hurricane. These Climbing Rope Cozies are made with the retired rope that was collected from the Human Powered Movement community after Hurricane Helene. If that doesn’t give you the warm and full circle fuzzies, we might need to reevaluate our relationship! Each cozie, made from 11’ of repurposed climbing rope, fits a 12oz/16oz can of your favorite flavored beverage. If you’re like me you probably already have a drawer full of cozies, but you likely don’t have one with a background story or impact like this one! These limited cozies are available for purchase on our sustainable Online Store HERE or you can win one for free by signing up for Perennial: A Time Based Endurance Run where we will be giving these away as prizes for each of the 3Hr, 6Hr & 10Hr categories! Speaking of HPM’s Hurricane Helene relief efforts you can still snag one of the last remaining bags of HPM x Black Coffee Roasting Co coffee with 100% of proceeds going to Pisgah Area SORBA to help rebuild trails in Western NC also impacted by the hurricane. Pro Tip: HPM is a proud Industry Partner of Pisgah Area SORBA! Human Powered Movement’s mission is to “inspire more activity in people’s lives”. In many cases, this inspired activity goes well beyond physical movement. We want to inspire you to actively support what’s important to you. Find ways to actively impact others and our environment in a positive way. Be mindful of your daily decisions and don’t be afraid to act when a text comes through asking for help … you never know how much of an impact your activity can have!
