Adventure Club - Filipino Medical Mission
Kristen Waugh is a 49-year-old mom, wife, and nurse who is forever in search of adventure. She was raised to embrace opportunities for movement, and after having 3 kids wanted to see how far her mind and body could carry her. Kristen has done everything from 5ks to Full Ironmans, and now ultramarathons.
This spring, Kristen traveled to the Philippines for a 2-week medical mission trip in remote mountain villages. (She’s been to the Philippines 2 other times as well as Belize, Tanzania, and Zanzibar). Her love for adventure and endurance blends perfectly with her knowledge of wilderness medicine and nursing.
Roads in the Philippines are carved out of the sides of mountains and are prone to landslides from typhoons and earthquakes. Many roads only go so before they are no longer passable and must be traveled by foot, which was the draw for Kristen and the HPM Adv Flag. She worked with a local Filipino doctor to set up clinics and provided medical care to nearly unreachable areas. Kristen shared “it was an honor to carry the HPM Adventure Flag and use my own physical abilities to bring much needed medical care and medicine to some of the most remote areas of the world.”
